Phatom Thread

In Paul Thomas Anderson’s story of an obsessive couturier and the woman who fights to love him, the kitchen is a site of pleasure and war.
Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the heart of British fashion, designing for royalty, movie stars, and high society under the prestigious House of Woodcock.
Reynolds is a confirmed bachelor, drawing inspiration from the women who pass through his life—until he meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), a strong-willed waitress who becomes both his muse and his lover. Their relationship unfolds with intensity and elegance, challenging the boundaries of control, creativity, and desire.
This was Daniel Day-Lewis’s final film before he retired, and it’s a masterclass in storytelling and style. One of the best scenes in the film Reynolds first meets Alma he orders an extravagant breakfast that reveals much about his character:
“Welsh rarebit with a poached egg on top, not too runny, and bacon, scones, butter, cream, jam (not strawberry), pot of lapsang and some sausages.”
Phantom Thread is a beautifully crafted exploration of love, power, and ritual—wrapped in couture and served with a side of understated drama.
