BEAR Scotland will be carrying out layby improvement works along the A85 near Loch Earn. The full scheme compromises of 13 laybys between St Fillans and Lochearnhead which will involve resurfacing, construction of footpaths at the rear of laybys where not present and possible signing works. These works will be undertaken in phases over a number of years with Phase 1 involving the works at Layby 4 and Layby 7 (see Figure 1 below) at National Grid References NN 68952 24614 and NN 67585 24779 respectively.

The works will comprise of the renewal of road markings, traffic signs and road studs. In addition, tactile paving will be installed at Layby 4, while a new footway will be constructed at Layby 7. The footway construction will require the layby to be widened by approximately 1.5m.
Layby 4 lies within St Fillans Conservation Area and will see installation/replacement of signs and installation of tactical pavement. It is proposed that existing signs will be replaced and new parking signs that will say ‘P’ X yds will be installed. The example of the sign can be seen below.

The proposed works are contained entirely within the existing trunk road boundary, with no changes that would alter the established character of the A85 carriageway. As such, we do not anticipate any adverse effects on the local landscape character, including the setting of the Conservation Area or the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park (LLTNP).
